George London was one of the most impressive bass-baritones of the post-war era. He sang alongside Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi and Nicolai Gedda, to name but a few, and captured the hearts of audiences with his distinctive voice and charismatic stage presence. A disease of the vocal cords forced him to abandon his singing career at a tragically early age. The film portrays this exceptional artist in all his diversity and features rare archive material of his great performances both as an opera singer and an interpreter of traditional spirituals and operetta. Another important element of the film is the interview footage with his widow Nora London, former colleagues, experts and current stars of the opera scene. These include Neil Shicoff, Catherine Malfitano and Deborah Polaski, who were taught by George London, supported in their career by the George London Foundation and today consider themselves his disciples.
